Water Vole Survey...

With an abundance of waterbodies throughout England, we recommend that consideration to the need for water vole surveys be given at the earliest stages of planning.

We provide a cost effective solution to assess the potential for water voles within your site, this allowing a calculated assessment of the need to conduct presence/likely absence surveys at the appropriate time of year. Our surveyors are proficient in the use of current industry standard survey techniques for water voles, ensuring all surveys and reports meet the stringent requirements of local planning authorities, whilst ensuring the welfare and protection of the water voles themselves.

Our services extend to the use of our own inflatable rib with electric outboard which allows us to survey otherwise inaccessible areas of a watercourse / waterbody, whilst speeding up survey times, through avoidance of any land access issues that may be present.

We work with those that require surveys due to planning and also those that are simply interested in ecology and are looking for advice on how to enhance land within their ownership.

We offer;

  • Habitat Suitability Assessments
  • Water Vole Presence / Likely Absence Surveys
  • Camera Assisted Surveys
  • Habitat Creation
  • Habitat Management Plans
  • Water Vole Exclusion Fence Install & Maintenance
  • Water Vole Translocation
  • Ongoing Monitoring

Following completion of a survey, a report is produced detailing not only the survey methodology and results, but also mitigation measures if required. This report would be suitable for submission with a planning application.

Priding ourselves on the provision of affordable yet appropriate solutions to water vole exclusion fencing, we can further enhance areas of mitigation through the installation of coir matting, bank revetments and aquatic planting. We also provide a care package for ongoing repair/maintenance throughout the development, we can further ensure peace of mind in regard to on-site ecology.

We provide water vole surveys to a range of projects and clientele and believing firmly that the development of a strong client relationship is key to effective project management, each project is issued with a Lead Ecologist who is here to help guide you through your project. Whether it be for residential or commercial development, utilities works, road schemes, quarries or renewable energy builds we are here to help. We can guide you through the needs of the planning authorities and protective species legislation.

Our surveyors are proficient in current industry standards ensuring surveys and reports meet the stringent requirements of planning authorities and the water voles themselves. Our company policy ensures that only suitably experienced surveyors will be deployed to conduct water vole habitat assessment surveys, and that only those experienced in the surveying of water voles are deployed for presence/likely absence surveys and re/translocation exercises.

We pride ourselves on our understanding of current legislation and good practice guidelines for water vole, and aim to provide appropriate recommendations in every instance. With a recent change in the protective status of water voles, there has never been a more appropriate time to consider their presence within your site. Due to the amendments to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is now an offence to;

  • Intentionally or recklessly damage, destroy or obstruct access to any structure or place used for shelter or protection;
  • Intentionally or recklessly disturb water voles whilst occupying a structure or place used for that purpose;
  • Intentionally kill, injure or take water voles;
  • Possess or control live or dead water voles or derivatives;
  • Sell water voles or offer or expose for sale or transport for sale;
  • Publish or cause to be published any advertisement  which conveys the buying or selling of water voles,

Please note that although surveys to establish a sites suitability to support water voles can be conducted throughout the year, due to seasonal constraints related to the activity of water voles, the period for presence/likely absence surveys are restricted to the months of mid-March – September.

To avoid delays, why not contact us today, as we would be happy to discuss the specifics of your project.
