Citizen Science | 12 December 2023
As we reflect on this year's Citizen Science endeavours, the Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count 2023 stands out as one of the most intriguing projects our team engaged in. This nationwide initiative contributes significantly to the understanding of butterfly populations in the UK.
• Results Recap: Released in September, this year's findings brought unexpected news. Contrary to previous concerns, butterflies are faring better, with over 1.5 million butterflies and day-flying moths recorded from July 14th to August 6th during the count. The average number of butterflies seen per count increased from 9 to 12 individuals compared to 2022.
• Species Snapshot: The Red Admiral, Gatekeeper, Large White, Small White, and Holly Blue were among the most-seen species. However, some species, like the Ringlet, Common Blue, and Speckled Wood, saw a decline compared to last year.
• Long-Term Trends: While the positive news is heartening, it's essential to consider long-term trends. Over the past 13 years, several species have faced significant declines, emphasizing the need for continued conservation efforts.
• Creating Butterfly Havens: To support butterflies, habitat creation is crucial. We're excited to collaborate with clients on inventive ways to create more butterfly-friendly environments, butterfly banks, wildflower meadows, nectar-rich planting schedules, to name just a few.
